Layout and Accommodations

The Caliber 38 is a tri-cabin layout with a dazzling full teak interior.

STATEROOM:   Pullman style double berth. Mattress under laid with HyperVent aerating matrix (new 2016).     Port side: Large storage area under bed: - large section under mattress for sailbags, etc.  - two sections with shelves & recessed sections - one section with 3 drawers Stbd side:  - large cedar lined hanging locker - 5 large drawers - shoe locker at bottom

SALON:  Drop Leaf Table -- Drops down from bulkhead; optionally, folds out toward starboard settee to double size.  Port settee has pullout base to make a double bed;  lee clothes installed. Stbd settee becomes single bed; lee clothes installed.  All fabric and foam is new as of 2011.  Hull areas behind settees, etc. have significant storage lockers. Area under port settee is fitted with Spectra watermaker & spare parts. Area under stbd settee is fitted with spare fuel tank and general storage.

AFT QUARTER BERTH:  Modified to sea berth + storage along side.  Cabinetry contains radio equipment , AIS, navigation/communications laptop, etc. Small navigation table above cabinet with storage shelves.  Storage under bed. Map storage in cubby hole extends under cockpit.

OTHER: Salon height is 6’ 5” at centre to 6’2” toward sides.  Teak and holly sole throughout. Handholds: Numerous handholds on ceiling & walls.  Two more teak handles added. Removable SS pole fitting horizontally from sink to heater wall creates a safety handhold for rough seas.  Victory 3½” brass temperature gauge & barometer. Brass oil wick lamp.

External GPS receiver                                              NOTE: Navigation program is obsolete; uses USB security key; navigation chart set is out of date. GPS position acquired through independent receiver.

Batteries: House: Four 6V Trojan T-125 golf lead acid batteries in single 12-volt bank; in secured battery box behind engine. Access is through lazarette. Trojan Hydrolink watering system installed. Total 480 AH.  New March 2019

Starter: Separate, sealed 12V battery under forward end of quarter berth.            New 2017. Access through cabinet door under front of quarter berth. Trickle charged through house battery bank; has separate isolation switch to engine.

Redwing Trolling Generator:  Trolling propeller turning DC generator: 5 amps at 6 kts. Note: An early version of a wind generator with trolling option. The wind component is not practical but trolling generation may be. Trolling line needed.

DC Leak Detection: Micro leak interrupter diode

Navigation Lights: LED Trilight on mast cap (New 2011) Boat nav lights updated in 2016. Switch on panel for setting mast trilight (sailing) lights or for surface level (motoring) lights.

Cabin Lights: LED with white/red (New 2011 & 2016)

 

Mechanical / Steering

Engine: Yanmar 4JH(B)E 40 HP / 3500 rpm (continuous) 44 HP / 3600 rpm (maximum). 4560 hours (recent inspection). In 2016:  Four new engine mounts / new 1 1/4" prop shaft / standard V-belt changed to flat belt. Transmission: Kanzaki inline drive  Model: KM4A / Ratio: 2.63:1 Strut replaced -- 2017. Standard Cutlass bearing & packing gland.

Propeller: 17” MaxProp 3-blade feathering bronze (new 2011). Spare 17” fixed 3-blade bronze. 

Alternator: 90 Amp output with external multistage regulator. Additional sources of battery charging are solar panels, towed generator and AC charger/inverter listed below.  Spare Alternator -- 80 Amps.   

Spare Parts: All sorts: injectors, head gasket, impellors, toilet pump, filters, fuses    freshwater pumps (2). Staylock rigging parts.   

Binnacle:  Basic Edson: housing compass, cupholder & folding table    (Inspected/serviced 2016)  Steering: Wheel, 32”, SS, leather covered.  (Chain, cable and quadrant -- Inspected 2019).  Rudder: Quadrant steering -- Protected by skeg 

Autopilot: Primary: Autohelm ST7000 Head Unit RAM linear type S2 (Oversized) Core pack 300 -- Lightly used, installed 2019.

Windvane Steering:    Sailomat 601 -- Removable. New control lines purchased (to be fitted). 

Anchor Gear / Deck / Cockpit

Anchor 1: Rocna 20KG with 300 feet of G4 3/8” chain -- new 2016. 

 Anchor 2:  Genuine Bruce 20KG with 60 feet 3B 3/8” chain and 250 feet 5/8” 3-strand nylon rope. 

 Anchor 3 :  Danforth 25 lbs with 30 feet of chain. Currently stored in anchor locker as an emergency stopper. Fitting on pushpit for mounting as stern anchor.

Windlass:  Lewmar Concept 1 vertical electric, 12V Power up & down foot switches 3/8” gypsy & drum -- New motor/gear box 2018. Spare Windlass: Lewmar Concept 1 motor & gearbox (used). Bow Rollers: Dual (only 1 anchor fitted at present).  Salt water wash down.

Anchor Locker / Bow Holding Tank:  A forward bulkhead creates the anchor locker and a watertight compartment as a holding tank and collision barrier. Holding tank can be evacuated from deck or drained overboard.

Dodger: Tempered glass windscreen with hard top, 2 opening panels, canvas sides; Sunbrella bimini. Original production. Dodger & bimini covered by solar panels. Electric windscreen wiper.

Cockpit Enclosure: Full surround enclosure. “Joiner” between dodger and bimini.  Quarter panels (new 2014 & new  Strataglass panes 2023). Cockpit table -- Folding (on starboard). Cockpit Cushions: Full set includes a “helmsman’s hump”.      Folding Chairs: 2 Sport-a-Seat “chairs”. “Lee cloths” - canvas wind screens around cockpit.

Full Deck Sunshade: Sunbrella, custom made. Full shade (covers cabin fore and aft of mast) for layovers in intense sun areas. Easy to assemble.                              Wind Scoop hatch attachment -- direct extra wind into open hatch to increase cabin airflow.  

Dinghy Davits:  SS, manually operated, fold inward to reduce length in dock.          Dinghy:  Zodiac 9 ft  Model Club4-Activ-V Inflatable bottom & folding wheels (new 2011) Roll up; can store in bag.  Hang in davits; store on deck. Bow storage bag. Dinghy motor: Yamaha 8HP 4-stroke Model F8 (2005). Mounted on stern rail. Removable outboard  SS motor crane -- can be stored in Lazarette. Kayak/Paddleboard Holder: Stanchion extensions on port side hold a kayak or paddleboards. SAFETY EQUIPMENT:   Jacklines: Fitted on deck when required    (new 2017).  Life Ring: One 24” with 50’ recovery rope. LifeSling: Horseshoe buoy in package with retrieving block & line. Liferaft: DBC 4-man canister SOLAS-B; Serial# 7327-4FT (Mfg Date Nov 1996) -- Recertified March 2018. Deck mounted, aft of mast. EPIRB: See Electronics section. MOB Pole. Emergency Tiller. Radar Reflector.  Storm Drogue: Para-Tech Delta Drogue 72” Tow line is ¾” double braid and Sea Anchor  Para-Tech Sea-Anchor 18’ -- Uses above tow line.
