SULAIRE is an International 8-meter, designed and built by William Fife III and launched in 1929. She spent only a couple of years racing in Scotland before she came to the US. There are records of her racing in Marblehead and Toronto under several different names and owners. Her current owner has had her for 35 years and has recently completed a full restoration.
Although almost all of SULAIR’s planking and framing were in perfect condition and remain origonal, her iron floors were all replaced with cast bronze, a new cold-molded wood/epoxy deck was built, the interior and cockpit were restored to original specifications, and all surfaces both inside and out were refinished.
SULAIRE has two masts: A newly-built hollow teardrop wooden mast copied from the original Fife mast, and a modern aluminum mast set up for racing. Once the rudder is hung and a few final latches are installed, she is ready to be launched and resume her racing illustrious career.
Meanwhile, in her purpose-built storage shed on the Pacific Northwest coast of the US, SULAIR’s tight seam planking is remarkably stable with only minimal cracking of her paint after years in the shop. No sun ever hits her, and the climate is ideal for preserving boats of this type.
Hull Planking: Original tight seamed carvel mahogany.
Interior: All varnished, minimal accommodations per class rule
Frames: On seven-inch centers. Every third fame is a larger, grown/sawn oak frame with Rock Elm bent frames between. All bent frames are original, and roughly half the sawn frames have been replaced with Locust.
Floors: New cast bronze
Deck: Cold molded cedar - underside sprung to sheer and v-matched as original
Cabin Top: Cold-molded cedar / mahogany
Traditional Wood Mast: Excellent condition, Teardrop shaped, hollow Oregon Pine. Matches original section/specification but short of rule measurement by a few inches. Original Fife iron hardware replaced with chromed bronze. Rigging old.
Modern Aluminum Mast: Excellent condition, measured to rule. New stainless rigging, Imron coating over epoxy primer
Sails: Dacron main older but usable, No. 1 genoa lightly used 3.5 oz. Norlam, 3/4 oz. spinnaker lightly used. Piles of older sails of varying condition.
Winches: Main: 3 speed Lewmar, Main sheet: 2 speed Barlow, Trimming: 2 speed Barlow, Running backs: 2 speed Anderson self tailing.
